4.4 Introduction to Self-governance and personal autonomy

THE LAST SMALL INPUTS – FOR REFLECTION REGARDING ENHANCHING SELF-DETERMINATION.

It is always good to start reflecting on one’s own emotional feelings – dealing with other people’s emotional feelings and expressions.

How do you look when you get it as you  like ?

How do you look when some one interact and prevents / prohibits you from getting it as you want?

There are several options – to train and develop your competences and skills reading other people’s faces and their body language at the internet.

Strengthened self-determination through reduced compatibility.

Remember – it is sometimes easier to make decisions – to perform self determination – if the things I have to choose between is more simple ….. for at start.

It is easier and good training to decide between 3 shirts for a start, or less  – when I have to decide how I want to be dressed for the day …….before I go for next level and decide between 4 shirts.

Simple and concrete language

To some it is easier to make decisions if I only have to say yes or no for at start – or when it comes to specific areas of decision making.

For at start it might be  easier to make a decision if the person only have to options – compared to “ What do you want to do this afternoon…?

Latency time

If people are stressed they often take quick decisions – and not necessary the decision they really like to make.  Make sure that the person have the time and feel comfortable about making decisions.   It is difficulty and a huge challenge to make decisions in life – big and small – if we are not used to make decisions.

SAFEWORDS MODEL

To work on strengthening other citizens’ competence to exercise self-determination and greater personal autonomy – is also to work with other personal people’s boundaries and personal insecurity.

It can trigger great uncertainty, anxiety and even frustration in those concerned and, in some situations, also aggression.

Having residents or citizens performing self-determination, might create conflicts with other clients and with general house  rules or even national legislation.

We would therefore like to introduce you to the Safeward Model as a model for how but generally increases safety in general when working with other people and especially when working with vulnerable people.

Safewards is a theoretical model with 10 associated interventions designed to improve the safety of everyone in inpatient wards by reducing conflict (physical, verbal aggression, absconding) and containment (forced medication, seclusion, and restraint) events.
