Centro San Viator

Centro San Viator was founded in 1953 in the region of Encartaciones, in the province of Biscay, in a rural area where job opportunities are usually limited to agricultural and livestock activity. Located in a mountainous area with a rugged landscape, terrestrial communications present many difficulties that accentuate the lack of opportunities for the residents of the region.

Centro San Viator offers training from Kinder Garden to High School and also Formación Profesional Básica (EQF 3), Grado Medio (EQF 4) and Grado Superior (EQF 5) to meet the needs of more than 900 students working with a staff of about 100 professionals. Our VET offer includes: Retail, Car Mechanics, Mechanization, Electronics-Electricity, Child Education, and Geriatrics. We offer courses for unemployed people, in order to respond to the high percentage of unemployment that currently exists in this region. Complementing our offer, we also promote training courses for active workers.

We are a school with a strong social character and a priority objective: helping people with fewer opportunities, who find themselves threatened by social exclusion. CSV receives about 150 students a year who have been in the educational system, which has failed them.

We also have 6 full-time classrooms with about 70 young students (aged 14-20) that are mentally disabled, as well as two part-time classrooms. The goal of these classes is to help them to achieve their maximum potential, help them to lead independent lives, and to introduce them into the labour market if possible.

We have a department focusing on projects that increase the inclusion of excluded groups (or groups at risk of exclusion). From this area, we implement tailor-made training courses to increase the employability of these groups.

Sosu Ostjylland is the second largest social and healthcare college in Denmark. We provide a variety of educational programs – as well as supplementary training for educated staff members – for social and health care institutions for elderly and disabled people and for hospitals and psychiatry. We continuously develop innovative pedagogic and didactic training material, and we work closely with employers in the field. We have more than 25 years’ experience in the training and further education of care staff. We have about 150 full-time employed staff members and 20 external professionals connected to our daily praxis. In 2016, the college had more than 800 full-time students, and about 2,000 professional caregivers participated on shorter or longer supplementary training courses. Our students are between the ages of 15 to 60 years old, and have more than 50 different ethnic and cultural backgrounds. For the youngest, we offer short introduction programs of 20 to 40 weeks, to prepare them for a start at the main educational programs of either 14 months (Social and Health Care Helper), or 32 months (Social and Health Care Assistant).

We are continuously involved in European projects and it is not difficult for us to ensure that project results make an impact both inside and outside of our organization. The results of our projects are directly integrated into the education of social and healthcare workers at the SOSU Ostjylland college, and they are therefore able to directly apply their new competencies to their workplaces once they have finished their training course.

Furthermore, SOSU is part of several national networks of Danish Social and Health Care colleges, which also benefit from the project results. The college is also a member of several international partnerships and networks with stakeholders in the care field in many European countries, and we always try to give them the opportunity to exploit our results as well.
